Electronic Prescribing Service

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is an NHS service. It gives you the chance to change how your GP sends your prescription to the place you choose to get your medicines or appliances from.

What does this mean for you?

Instead of collecting your paper prescription from the Practice, you can nominate a Pharmacy and the GP will send your prescription electronically to the place you choose, saving you time.

You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop.

You may not have to wait as long at the pharmacy as there will be time for your repeat prescriptions to be ready before you arrive.

Is this service right for you?

Yes, if you have a stable condition and you:

  • don’t want to go to your GP practice every time to collect your repeat prescription.
  • collect your medicines from the same place most of the time or use a prescription collection service now.

It may not be if you:

  • don’t get prescriptions very often.
  • pick up your medicines from different places.

How can you use EPS?

You need to choose a place for your GP Practice to electronically send your prescription to. This is called nomination. You can choose:

  • a pharmacy.
  • a dispensing appliance contractor (if you use one)

Ask any pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor that offers EPS or your GP practice to add your nomination for you. You don’t need a computer to do this.

Can I change my nomination or cancel it and get a paper prescription?

Yes you can. If you don’t want your prescription to be sent electronically tell your GP. If you want to change or cancel your nomination speak to any pharmacist or dispensing appliance contractor that offers EPS, or your GP Practice. Tell them before your next prescription is due or your prescription may be sent to the wrong place.

Is EPS reliable, secure and confidential?

Yes. Your electronic prescription will be seen by the same people in GP Practices, pharmacies and NHS prescription payment and fraud agencies that see your paper prescription now.

For more information please visit https://digital.nhs.uk/services/electronic-prescription-service

Flu (Influenza) Vaccinations

Flu (also known as influenza) is a highly infectious illness caused by the flu virus. It spreads rapidly through small droplets coughed or sneezed into the air by an infected person.   For most people, flu is unpleasant but not serious. You will usually recover within a week.

Studies have shown that flu vaccines provide effective protection against the flu, although protection may not be complete and may vary between people. Protection from the vaccine gradually decreases and flu strains change over time. Therefore, new vaccines are made each year and people at risk of flu are encouraged to be vaccinated every year.

The flu vaccination is offered to people in at-risk groups. These people are at greater risk of developing serious complications if they catch flu, such as pregnant women and elderly people.

For more information on who should have the flu vaccine use this link: https://www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/flu-vaccine/

If you're eligible and would like to request a vaccine, please contact the practice or alternatively request a vaccine using this link: https://systmonline.tpp-uk.com/2/OnlineConsultation?OrgId=A81066 - choose "Health Review" and complete the request a vaccination form.

  • Use NHS 111 online to get advice or find help quickly.
  • Register your organ donation choice.

Is it safe?

You can also use fingerprint or face recognition on your phone (if your device supports it).

Who can use it?

  • You need to be 13 or older.
  • You must be registered with a GP surgery in England.

Primary Care Network

What is A PCN?

BYTES Primary Care Network (PCN) is a group of GP practices — including Park Lane Surgery — working together as a team to provide better local healthcare.

Instead of just relying on individual GPs, the PCN brings in a wider range of health professionals — such as pharmacists, mental health practitioners, and social prescribers — all coordinated to give you more joined-up and proactive care.

By working together:

  • Offer more services locally
  • Provide longer or more tailored appointments when needed
  • Support people with long-term health conditions in a more joined-up way

Why does it matter for you?

  • It means you can access more types of care close to home.
  • It helps to make your care more personalised
  • It ensures our GP practices share resources so patients can get more specialised support.

If you want to find out more about BYTES PCN, have a look at their website: https://bytespcn.nhs.uk/

Sick/Fit Notes
  • If you have been ill for 7 days or less you don’t need to see a Doctor. You can complete a Self-Certification form yourself. However some employers insist on a Doctor’s note, and under these circumstances a fee will be charged.
  • If you have been ill for more than 7 days you will need a doctor’s certificate. These certificates are called ‘Fitness to Work’ Certificates. The doctor may call you or arrange for an appointment. If you have already been seen by your Doctor about this illness your certificate will be sent to you within a week.
  • If you have already had a Sick Note (Fit Note) for this illness your Doctor may not need to see you to issue an additional Sick Note. A Telephone Appointment may be appropriate for this request.

You can request a sick note online 24/7 via SystmConnect, using this link: https://systmonline.tpp-uk.com/2/OnlineConsultation?OrgId=A81066

Social Prescribing (Practical Support)

Social Prescribing is a service that helps you improve your overall wellbeing by connecting you with local activities, services, and support — not just medical treatments.

At Park Lane Surgery, through BYTES PCN, our Social Prescribing Link Workers can spend more time talking with you about what matters in your life. They can help with things like:

  • Feeling isolated or lonely
  • Managing stress, anxiety, or low mood
  • Support with housing, finances, or employment
  • Finding local groups and activities
  • Long-term health conditions and lifestyle changes

Instead of only focusing on symptoms, Social Prescribing looks at the bigger picture — your health, home life, social connections, and what would help you feel better day-to-day.

How it works:

  1. Your GP or practice team can refer you to a Social Prescribing Link Worker.
  2. You’ll have time to talk about what’s going on and what support you need.
  3. They’ll help connect you with the right local services, groups, or resources.

Why it matters:
Social Prescribing gives you personalised, practical support to improve your wellbeing in ways that medication alone can’t. If you’d like to be referred or learn more, just ask a member of the team.

Stop Smoking

Please use this link to access information and support from our local stop smoking service: https://www.nth.nhs.uk/services/stop-smoking-service/

Summary Care Record

Your patient record is held securely and confidentially on the electronic system at your GP practice. If you require treatment in another NHS healthcare setting such as an Emergency Department or Minor Injury Unit, those treating you would be better able to give you appropriate care if some of the information from the GP practice were available to them.

This information can now be shared electronically via: The Summary Care Record, used nationally across England

The information will be used only by authorised health care professionals directly involved in your care. Your permission will be asked before the information is accessed, unless the clinician is unable to ask you and there is a clinical reason for access.

If you would like to opt out, please ask reception for our opt out form.

A parent or guardian can request to opt out children under 16 but ultimately it is the GP’s decision whether to create the records or not, because of their duty of care to the child. If you are the parent or guardian of a child under 16 and feel that they are able to understand, then you should make this information available to them.

Who Has Access?

Across all health care settings, including urgent care, community care and outpatient departments in England.

Blood tests may be needed to enable the Doctor to monitor your condition and treatment. Please allow 48 hours for the result of blood tests to return from the laboratory and for the Doctor to review the results. Some tests may take longer. The Doctor will provide details when requesting the test.

You can usually see test results via online services:

Training (GP Registrars and Medical Students)

General Practice Registrars

We are an approved GP training practice on the Durham Tees Valley GP Training Scheme. Dr Mendis is the approved GP Trainer and supports the GP Trainee.

GP Trainees (referred to as GP Registrars) are fully qualified Doctors who have completed at least 2 years in hospital training. They work under supervision while gaining experience and teaching in our practice. They are deliberately given longer appointment times so they can develop their consultation skills.

The career pathway to becoming a GP starts with a 5 year course at University gaining a degree in medicine then two foundation years of hospital training then at least another 3 years of GP speciality training usually 18 months in hospital and 18 months in approved training practice such as Park Lane Surgery. The training GP's are know as ST1, ST2 and ST3 depending on their stage of training. ST1 trainees come to Park Lane Surgery for 6 months then have 18 months in hospital; and return for at least 12 months as ST£. During these 3 yeatrs they have to sit further exams, complete a series of assessments with thier trainer and finally the RCA exam whioch involves submitting 13 suitable videos to the Royal College of General Practice examiners to assess. If successful they become MRCGP (member of the Royal College of General Practitioners)

As part of their training the trainees are sometimes required to video consultations to develop their communication skills. Your consent will alwasy be sought both before the consultation to ensure that you agree to the recording and also afterwards to ensure you are willing to allow it to be viewed for teaching or exam purposes. All recordins are deleted after being used for teaching purposes.

Medical Students

The Practice is a community teaching practice for Newcastle Medical School. The Medical Students spoend time in General Practice during thier 5 years of training.

With supervision from a GP or Nurse, Medical Students may, with your consent, join your consultation. This is the way they learn to become good Doctors and understand patient viewson thier illness and care. The 4th and 5th Year Students may also see patients on their own, closely supervised by a GP. We really appreciate your help with learning.

Travel Health

Our Nurses can provide comprehensive travel health advice and arrange for appropriate immunisations. Please arrange an appointment for a travel consultation at least 6-8 weeks before departure if possible. Vaccines need time to take effect and some may require a course over several weeks.

Please note that some vaccines are not available on the NHS and patients will need to pay a fee for these vaccinations.  We do not provide a private travel vaccination service - our Nurses will advise you which vaccinations you will be able to have in the Practice and information on local travel clinics where you can access private vaccinations.

Additional travel information:

The following websites will give you additional travel advice

  • Travel Health for information of vaccinations available on NHS
  • MASTA for private vaccination clinics

You and Your General Practice

You and Your General Practice (YYGP) is a national guide on what you can expect from your GP surgery. It also explains what you can do to get the best from the NHS and describes what practices and patients can expect of each other. It has been developed to help patients get the best from their GP team. YYGP also sets out how patients and or their representatives can provide feedback or raise concerns about their GP practice.

All GP practices should have a link to the YYGP information on their website from the 1st October 2025, on the practice website home page. If you want to give feedback or raise a concern you can ask to speak to your practice manager. If preferred, you can leave your feedback with the ICB here (ICB Digital Patient Feedback - Tell us what you think).
